Sandwell Aquatics Centre
Location: Birmingham
Sector: Sports & Fitness
Project Overview
Sandwell Aquatics Centre was a flagship venue for the two thousand and twenty two Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The project demanded absolute reliability across complex building services, particularly within the pool systems where performance, safety and long term durability were critical under an immovable event deadline.
Our Approach
VIP worked closely with the appointed sub contractor and specialist swimming pool engineers from an early stage. We provided our expansion design service, supported by professional indemnity insurance, to ensure thermal movement within the pipework was properly managed across the large scale installation. Alongside this, our team drew on decades of product and industry knowledge to specify actuated and lever operated butterfly valves that suited both operational control and maintenance requirements. Clear communication and a collaborative mindset helped keep all parties aligned as the design developed.
Execution
The expansion design was delivered to integrate seamlessly with the wider mechanical layout, reducing risk during installation and future operation. In parallel, VIP supplied high quality butterfly valves suitable for demanding pool environments, ensuring smooth control and dependable performance. Our ISO nine thousand and one processes underpinned every stage, from design checks through to product supply, while our team remained on hand to answer queries and adjust details as the programme evolved.
The Outcome
Sandwell Aquatics Centre was successfully completed in time for the Commonwealth Games, operating exactly as intended during a global sporting event. The project demonstrated VIP ability to support complex, high profile developments by combining technical expertise, accredited systems and a willingness to go the extra mile. It also reflected over forty years of experience delivering dependable solutions on major projects where there is no margin for error.
